The Turkish authorities have come up with an alternative to the sub-sanctioned Mir card so that Russian tourists can continue to pay in the country. They are offered the Turkish payment system "TROY".
In September 2022, Turkish banks stopped servicing Russian MIR cards, which were sanctioned for Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Therefore, an alternative was found in Turkey – this is the “TROY” card. So, Russian tourists who will have this card will be able to withdraw cash from any ATM in Turkey and abroad.
Aydinlik reports this.
“By purchasing an integrated card, Russian tourists can make purchases in our country using these cards. Bankers who are experts on this topic also noted that there are no restrictions for Russians to use other payment methods in our country, but since they cannot use the American system when they travel to their countries give them TROY cards We also learned that there is a model at the central bank checkout where tourists can pay for hotels and transport from their countries via online -system,” the Turkish news agency notes.
It is added that most Turkish banks work with the TROY payment system. As of March 2022, there were more than 12 million cards of this system in circulation, its market share exceeded 4%. The publication notes that Turkish banks will be able to avoid US sanctions for such cooperation.
The two countries are in regular negotiations on payments for energy, the use of national currencies, the financial systems of the two countries, not affected by sanctions and, possibly, the establishment of a SWAP line.
Recall, according to media reports, the EU agreed on new sanctions against Russia, including oil prices.
