Emma Coronel Aispuru – the wife of drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loer, nicknamed El Chapo (“Shorty”) – was detained at the Dallas airport, according to the website of the US Department of Justice. Tomorrow she will appear before the District of Columbia Court.
The Justice Department notes that Ispuro is accused of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for import into the United States. In addition, the woman is suspected of helping Guzmán escape from the Mexican prison Altiplano in July 2015.
After Shorty was arrested again in January 2016 in Mexico, his wife was involved in planning another escape, investigators say.
Guzman is the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Until February 2014, the US Department of Justice called him the most powerful drug lord in the world.
The shorty escaped from prison twice. The first time he was detained in 1993 by the Guatemalan authorities and extradited to Mexico. There, the court gave the nakrobaron 20 years in prison, but in 2001 he fled, bribing the guards.
The second verdict followed in 2014. Then he was put in a specially guarded prison. But already in July 2015, he escaped from it: a half-kilometer tunnel was found under his camera.
In January 2016, Guzman was arrested again by the Mexican authorities. A year later, he was extradited to the United States, where in July 2019 he was sentenced to life in prison and another 30 years in prison.
