Anthony Fauci, the leading US infectious disease specialist, predicted the peak incidence of the omicron strain of coronavirus in the country in an interview with NewsNation. In his opinion, it will be at the end of January.
The chief infectious disease specialist noted that taking into account the territory of the United States and the situation with vaccinations, it will take more than a couple of weeks to reach the peak values. Currently, there is still a high growth rate in the number of infections.
“Undoubtedly, we are still in the midst of a pandemic. Yesterday we had 300 thousand cases. This is a pandemic. Hopefully we get out of this and move into the phase where we have good control. But now we are not there, ”Fauci emphasized.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 61.9 percent of the US population is fully vaccinated. The country is among the leaders in the number of infections and deaths due to coronavirus. More than 54.7 million cases of the disease have been identified.
Fauci said earlier that the new omicron strain of the coronavirus causes a less severe course of the disease, but its transmissibility threatens the health system. A large number of cases of omicron-strain infection can neutralize the positive effect of reducing the severity of the disease, he said.
