In the United States, detailed results of the 2020 census were published, from which it follows that the proportion of white non-Hispanic population in the country for the first time since the start of the census was less than 60%, reports the Associated Press.

If in 2010 the share of the white-skinned population was 63.7%, then in 2020 it dropped to 57.8%, which was the lowest figure in the history of the census. This is due to the decline in fertility among white women compared to Hispanics and Asians, writes AP.

In contrast, the group of people identifying as Hispanics has grown by 23% in a decade to 18.7%. As a result, they constitute the second largest group in the US population. Another 12.4% are blacks, 6% are Asians, writes the Financial Times.

At the same time, whites remain the most numerous group in the United States, apart from a few states. According to the latest census, the situation has changed in California. There, Hispanics became the largest racial group, the share of this population has grown in ten years from 37.6 to 39.4%. The proportion of white people in the state fell from 40.1% to 34.7%. White non-Hispanic US residents are also not the dominant group in Hawaii, New Mexico, and the District of Columbia.

The number of those who identify themselves as two or more races has grown from 9 million to 33.8 million, and now accounts for 10% of the total US population.

US Census Bureau spokesman Nicholas Jones, commenting on the new data, said the US population was much more multi-ethnic and more ethnically diverse than previously thought.

Overall, the US population has grown by 7.4% over the past decade. This is one of the lowest growth rates in the history of accounting. The country's population grew more slowly only in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. Slightly more than half of the increase from 2010 to 2020 – 51% – came from Hispanics.
