The attention of the eyewitnesses was attracted by the loud noise that accompanied the appearance of the meteor.
Residents of three US states have witnessed a rare spectacle – the entry into the Earth's atmosphere of a celestial body called a meteor, bolide or fireball.
NASA reports.
A bright meteor was seen in the sky in the morning hours. Eyewitnesses' attention was drawn to a loud noise that accompanied the appearance of an orange fireball with a white tail behind it.
The object, which scientists called the fireball, was moving southwest at a speed of 88,500 kilometers per hour, breaking apart and sinking deeper into Earth's atmosphere. It broke up about 55 kilometers above the surface of the planet over a swampy area in Louisiana.
More than 30 people in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi reported that they witnessed this spectacle.
According to the US National Space Agency, the fragmentation of the fireball generated enough energy to create shock waves propagating to the ground, causing shock and vibration. At its peak, the meteor was more than 10 times brighter than the full moon.
Recall that an unknown rocket collided with the surface of the Earth's satellite on the far side of the Moon, resulting in a crater with a probable diameter of 10-20 meters.
