Englishwoman Rebecca Roberts gave birth to two children: son Noah and daughter Rosalie.
Although babies and twins, their age is different: the brother is 20 days older than the sister.
In the medical world, this phenomenon is called “superfetation”, according to Good Morning America.
“This happens very rarely,” says David Walker, obstetrician-gynecologist at the Royal United Hospital. – Usually, when a woman is in a position, her body starts several biological processes aimed at preventing simultaneous pregnancy. But in rare cases, a pregnant woman may continue to ovulate or release an egg, and then that egg may be fertilized and implanted in the uterus at different times.
Roberts, 39, miraculously became pregnant after several failed attempts. The woman was being treated for infertility and had already lost all hope of becoming a mother. And, of course, when the gynecologist confirmed her pregnancy, then Rebecca was the happiest woman in the world. At the next ultrasound, when the future son was about 12 weeks old, the doctor told the woman one more news – she was pregnant with another child.
“When the doctors said that this is rare, but still happens, I was relieved,” says Rebecca. – I was warned that the second child, that is, my daughter may not survive, but I began to assure myself of the opposite and repeat that everything will be fine with me and my children.
At the 33rd week, doctors had to start an emergency birth because the youngest of the twins stopped growing due to a problem with the umbilical cord.
The older twin, Noah, was in the neonatal intensive care unit after giving birth, but was discharged three weeks later. And Rosalie remained in the clinic under the supervision of neonatologists for three months.
Now mom and children are already at home.
“When we put them next to each other, they do not seem to recognize, reach out and touch each other's faces, and this is the most beautiful thing that can be in life,” says Roberts. “They have an amazing bond and when they grow up they will feel even more special.
