In Russia this year they are going to save on New Year's decorations.

The authorities of several regions of the Russian Federation refused to launch fireworks, purchase New Year's decorations and mass celebrations. City streets will be decorated with existing toys and illumination, and the saved money will be sent to the front.

This is reported by the Russian editorial office of Radio Liberty.

There will be no fireworks on New Year's Eve, particularly in Novorossiysk. The mayor of the Russian city, Andrei Kravchenko, said that launching fireworks is a “minute, but expensive” pleasure. Funds allocated for the fireworks will be used to purchase equipment for the front.

The mayor of Sochi, Alexey Kopaygorodsky, ordered that New Year’s fireworks displays be cancelled, and the money saved be used for military needs. He called on local residents and businessmen to do the same.

“This will be the best gift for our fellow countrymen on the front line of a special military operation and their families,” Kopaygorodsky wrote in his telegram channel. According to him, the emphasis during the Christmas and New Year holidays will be on “strengthening family values, national culture and patriotic themes.”

Governor of the Krasnodar Territory Veniamin Kondratyev, during the “direct line”, recalled the ban on fireworks introduced in the region after the start of the war in Ukraine and called on residents to refrain from setting them off, but promised not to “grab people by the hand.”

“Let's wait until the special operation is completed, our soldiers will return, and then with all our hearts we will celebrate the New Year as we are used to. And now let's take care of our colleagues from law enforcement agencies and the military,” Kondratyev said.

Recall that in 2024 the Kremlin plans to allocate 30% of total state budget expenditures to war. The Russian Ministry of Finance proposes a defense budget of 10.8 trillion rubles, which is equivalent to approximately 6% of GDP and an increase of 68% compared to 2023.
