Scammers embezzled more than 1 million Czech crowns, which they allegedly collected to help Ukrainians.
In the capital of the Czech Republic, the police exposed fraudsters who collected financial aid allegedly for Ukraine, but in fact used the money for their own needs.
Czech Radio reports this.
The collection was organized by an 18-year-old boy who founded the “We Are the People” foundation for this purpose. For several months, the members of this group collected money in urns, which were placed in department stores and supermarkets in Prague and nearby municipalities in the Central Bohemian Region.
In total, more than 1 million Czech crowns (around 44 thousand euros) were collected. The young man and his accomplices used the funds they received for their own needs and entertainment, for example, traveling around the world, paying for accommodation, buying food.
“Thus, they took advantage of the difficult situation of people affected by the war in Ukraine and the willingness of citizens to contribute to helping the country. The total amount of damage that we have been able to prove so far is about one million one hundred thousand crowns, but we cannot rule out that the damage could be several times greater,” the Prague police said.
The organizer of the collection has been detained and faces up to eight years in prison.
We remind you that in the first half of 2024, the Czech Republic earned 4.4 billion crowns thanks to taxes and insurance premiums from Ukrainian refugees.
