An Olympic gold medal is every athlete's dream. Therefore, Zhu was shocked when suddenly the coating of the hard-won precious metal peeled off.
“At first I thought it was just dirt, so I rubbed my finger. Then I found that nothing changed, so I scratched it, but the stain got bigger,” wrote the Chinese, according to the Global Times the Weibo social network. The trampoline jumper also posted three photos showing the peeling coating of the medal.
In the title fights in Tokyo, the medals were made from recycled materials from electrical appliances for the first time. According to the Olympic organizers, the gold is certainly not damaged, but the coating, which was supposed to protect the medal from scratches, is likely. “But that has no influence on the quality of the medal itself,” said the organizers.
It is not known whether the 23-year-old will get her medal replaced.
