Deputy head of the TsPVS Zhuravlev: in Syria, 1 serviceman died during shelling of militants

In Syria, a soldier died as a result of a mortar attack from militants near the village of Khantutin. This was announced by Rear Admiral Oleg Zhuravlev, Deputy Head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties (CPVS) in the SAR, RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
“Over the past day, one shelling from the positions of illegal armed groups was recorded in the Idlib de-escalation zone,” Zhuravlev said.
On January 1, in the Syrian city of Al-Shaddad, the province of Al-Hasak, unknown persons fired at a US military base from mortars. As a result of the incident, sirens went off at the base and the level of combat readiness was increased.
The Syrian civil war began in March 2011. The main participants in the conflict are government forces on the side of Bashar al-Assad, the so-called moderate opposition and Islamist groups. The opposition is supported by Turkey, Russia is helping the Assad government. Idlib is the only region in Syria that still remains largely in the hands of armed groups.
