In the Russian Federation, the number of "violent acts of a sexual nature" over the past three years has grown by 483%.
In Russia, former prisoners pardoned for participating in the war against Ukraine are increasingly committing sexual violence over children. Thus, the number of crimes against the sexual integrity of minors in the Russian Federation has been growing for the third year in a row.
We can explain this.
The authors of the publication cited the example of recent events in the Russian village of Prokhorovka. There, 33-year-old war participant Alexey Gonchar-Bysha abused a 15-year-old teenager. The attacker kicked the guy, put him in the trunk, and then raped him in the presence of other children. The man promised to cut off the guy’s ear and shoot his father.
It is noted that this is not the first abuse of a child that the “hero of the Northern Military District” has committed. Local media reported 10 similar cases. Most of the defendants are “Wagnerites,” pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin. These cases are classified, so it is very difficult to establish the status of the defendants. Relevant materials on court websites are published in hidden form or are simply absent.
“It is impossible to establish the exact number of children who survived sexualized violence at the hands of the “heroes of the Northern Military District.” Such cases very rarely reach the court, and even less often reach the press. However, we can say for sure that their number significantly exceeds the number of cases described in the media: as Sibir.Realii noted, over the past five years, the number of cases of sexualized crimes by military personnel has increased by 115%, and in more than half of the cases the victims were minors,” – the material says.
According to an analysis of criminal case statistics, the number of crimes against the sexual integrity of minors in Russia has been growing for the third year. The number of “sexual assaults” during this period increased by 483% compared to pre-war 2021 – that is, almost six times. A the number of “indecent acts” against minors increased by 62%.

The publication also cites as an example several other crimes committed by former prisoners who participated in the war. Thus, prisoner Andrei Frolov was detained on suspicion of raping a 9-year-old girl. The man was previously convicted of another rape, murder and car theft, but was released from prison, joining the ranks of the Wagner PMC.
Another pardoned war prisoner, Ivan Kalinin from the Kurgan region, raped a 7-year-old girl. Before that, he had two convictions for intentionally causing grievous bodily harm, robbery and robbery.
Former prisoner Nikolai Nechaev raped a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Perm in February 2024. This defendant previously served a sentence for rape and robbery.
In the Orenburg region, Wagner mercenary Yuri Gavrilov raped a fifth-grader. Another Wagnerite, Alexei Khlebnikov, was detained on suspicion of raping his 13-year-old niece in the forest and threatening him with a knife. Previously, the “hero” was imprisoned for murder.
By the way, in April, the Novaya Gazeta Europe publication reported that in Russia, almost 200 ex-participants in the war against Ukraine were convicted of violent crimes after returning home.
