We are talking about fraud and contempt of court.
The Moscow Lefortovsky District Court has received a new criminal proceeding against the Russian oppositionistAlexey Navalny.
This is reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the press service of the court.
We are talking about fraud and contempt of court – these two cases were combined into one. Navalny faces up to ten years in prison for them, his lawyer Olga Mikhailova said. It is not yet known when the court hearing will take place.
The defender of the oppositionist notes that Navalny may face new charges in this case. According to Mikhailova, they used the procedure of separating individual episodes from the case in order to “leave themselves the opportunity to conduct more searches in the future, and so on, if they want.”
The fraud case against Navalny was opened in December 2020. It is noted that the oppositionist and his associates spent 356 million rubles of donations collected by the politician’s funds. The maximum penalty under this article provides for ten years in prison.
The criminal case of insulting the judge was opened in May last year. Judge Vera Akimova considered a case of defamation of a World War II veteran. During the trial, Navalny accused the judge of bias and received more than ten comments. At the same time, the judge said that she would send the materials of the hearings to the Moscow investigative Committee to check Navalny’s “offensive statements”.
Recall that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is now in prison, was included in the list of terrorists and extremists. In particular, his associates Ruslan Shaveddinov, Lyubov Sobol, Georgy Alburov and Vyacheslav Gimadi were also included in the register.
