Russian experts suggested building a “space gun” to launch satellites. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a study published by experts from the head scientific institute “Roscosmos” TsNIIMash.
Scientists believe that given the current level of scientific and technological progress, the idea, which was first described by Jules Verne in the novel “From the Cannon to the Moon” in 1865, can now be realized. Thus, experts intend to launch small satellites with carrier shells from electromagnetic guns. Among the options proposed by the researchers are a linear railgun and an annular mass accelerator.
Experts note that the advantage of the “space gun” is the low cost of launching and the high efficiency of launching satellites. However, they also emphasize that the satellites will be subjected to exorbitant overloads upon launch.
Earlier it was reported that Russia will spend 1.5 billion rubles in 2020-2021 on the development of a technical design for a super-heavy launch vehicle “Yenisei”, intended for flights to the Moon.
