A fire in a hospital for those infected with a coronavirus in the Romanian city of Piatra Neamt killed 10 people. Reported by the Associated Press with reference to the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.
Another 10 people were injured, seven of them are in critical condition. Burns of the first and second degree were received by the doctor on duty who tried to save patients from intensive care. Another doctor and two nurses were also injured.
The fire started in the intensive care unit. According to the preliminary version of the Ministry of Health of the country, the cause of the fire was a short circuit. The agency clarifies that the facility was in poor condition.
The country's prosecutor's office opened a criminal case. The hospital's chief physician, Lucian Micu, was appointed just three weeks ago after his predecessor resigned due to ill-treatment of patients. He resigned after media reports of patients, including those with suspected COVID-19, who were forced to wait outside in the freezing cold to seek medical attention.
In the spring, a fire broke out in the Moscow hospital No. 50 for patients with COVID-19. Then two people died. A similar incident occurred at St. George's Hospital in St. Petersburg. Five patients died, connected to mechanical ventilation devices (IVL).
The ventilators that caught fire in hospitals were produced at one plant. The equipment was delivered to hospitals from the Ural Instrument-Making Plant (UPZ), which is part of the Rostec Corporation. Later, Roszdravnadzor suspended the circulation of these ventilators.
