The body of the first newborn child was discovered on Friday, September 15. Two people were immediately detained on suspicion of murder: a 54-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, who is his daughter and the mother of the deceased child.
Late Friday evening, the body of a second baby was found in the same area in state of significant decomposition. On Saturday morning, investigators announced the discovery of the body of a third child buried in the basement.
On Saturday, a representative of the Gdansk District Prosecutor's Office, Mariusz Duszynski, announced that investigative measures had been taken with the detained 20-year-old woman.
“The prosecutor accused her of committing three crimes. Two relate to murder, and the third crime is incest,” he noted.
If charged with murder, a woman faces life imprisonment; incest, according to the Polish Criminal Code, is punishable by imprisonment for a term of three months to five years.
The woman’s 54-year-old father was also brought to the prosecutor’s office. In the afternoon, Prosecutor Dushinsky announced that the man had been charged with three counts of murder in the newborn case and two counts of incest. The second of these latest charges involves another daughter.
An autopsy on the newborns to determine their cause of death is scheduled for Sunday. On the same day, applications for the arrest of the suspects are expected to be filed.
