From July 1, the state of Burgenland in Austria will introduce compulsory community service for refugees. Refusal to participate will have unpleasant consequences.
This was reported by the German publication Bild, citing the regional government.
Refugees will be offered jobs such as caring for parks, helping in nursing homes, or cleaning.
The hourly rate is 1.6 euros.
If an asylum seeker refuses to work twice without a valid reason, he or she will be at risk of losing basic assistance. This means that he or she will have a simple place to sleep instead of an apartment, will not receive health insurance, and will only receive minimal food and basic treatment.
“Anyone who receives ongoing support from the state must also take responsibility and give something back to society,” said Burgenland's Minister of Social Affairs, Daniela Winkler.
The publication noted that in Germany, such a practice is also legally possible: Section 5 of the Law on Assistance to Asylum Seekers allows refugees to be involved in community service as early as three months after arrival.
Let us remind you that from July 12, health insurance for Ukrainian refugees in Austria will be available only through official employment or voluntary self-insurance.
