In the United States, in the state of New York, the number of hospitalizations for children with COVID-19 has grown fivefold. It is reported by The Washington Post.
Two thousand children were hospitalized across the country – an increase of almost 31 percent in ten days. In total, over the past week in the United States, the number of children and adolescents infected with coronavirus has grown to 170 thousand. According to the newspaper, the surge is associated with the emergence of a new omicron strain of the disease.
Earlier, the chief infectious disease specialist of the United States, Anthony Fauci, said that despite the less severe course of the disease with omicron, its transmissibility threatens the American health care system. A large number of cases of infection with a new strain can neutralize the positive effect of reducing the severity of the disease, he said.
