Italian police have discovered the mummified remains of a woman sitting at a table more than two years after her death. Marinella Beretta, 70, who had no living relatives, was found in her home in northern Italy. The police found her remains when law enforcement officers went around the houses and warned the population about strong winds.
According to Italian media, her neighbors have not seen her for at least two and a half years. They had not seen Beretta since September 2019 and assumed she had moved at the start of the coronavirus pandemic that hit northern Italy in 2020.
“What happened to Marinella Beretta in Como, forgotten loneliness, hurts our conscience, no one should be left alone,” Family Minister Elena Bonetti said on Facebook.
According to a 2018 report from the National Institute of Statistics, almost 40% of people over 75 in Italy live alone. The same number said they had neither relatives nor friends to turn to if necessary.
“The mystery of Marinella's invisible life behind the closed gates of her cottage teaches us a terrible lesson,” says the newspaper Messaggero. “The real sadness isn't that others didn't notice her death. It's that they didn't realize that Marinella Beretta was alive.”
