In Italy, found “Korean” mosquitoes – carriers of a dangerous virus
In the northern regions of Italy, mosquitoes have been found that carry deadly diseases. The results of the work were shared by the scientists of the Milan State University in the international scientific journal Parasites & Vectors .
Scientists have found the so-called “Korean” blood-sucking species Aedes koreicus. It is noted that their distribution is favorably influenced by climatic conditions, active movement of people and goods.
University staff in the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia alone have about six thousand larvae and hundreds of eggs of Aedes koreicus. These mosquitoes are widespread in South Korea, Japan, northern China and some regions of Russia. Experts have determined that the “Korean” mosquitoes tolerate the cold well, therefore they are actively spreading in the mountains.
Aedes koreicus mosquitoes are potential carriers of the Japanese encephalitis virus. According to the WHO, it is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asian countries.
Svetlana Roslavtseva, head of the laboratory for disinsection problems at the Institute of Disinfection of Rospotrebnadzor, told the MIR 24 TV channel that 43 species of mosquitoes can transmit West Nile fever.
