Passenger and freight trains collided in Greece.
As a result of a fatal accident on the night of March 1 in northern Greece, where a passenger and freight train collided, the death toll rose to 36 people, many passengers were injured. The police arrested the stationmaster.

According to a police spokesman, the 59-year-old head of the station near which the train accident occurred was detained. Charges will be announced soon. Two more people were detained for questioning.

It has not yet been possible to establish how fast the trains were moving before the fatal collision, but the bodies of some of the victims were found 30-40 meters from the crash site, local media reported.
Many of the 350 people on board the passenger train were students returning from a carnival celebration in Greece, officials said. This year, the three-day festival leading up to Lent was celebrated for the first time since the start of the pandemic in 2020.
Yiannis Nitsas, president of the Greek railway union, said eight railway workers were among those killed in the accident, including two freight train drivers and two passenger train drivers.
