Belarus has lost the chance to get out of Russia's embrace and pursue an independent policy. This was stated by a German diplomat, future head of the Munich Security Conference Christoph Heusgen, RND reports.
“Germany and Europe have done everything within the framework of the so-called Eastern Partnership to give Belarus the opportunity to reform the state, bring the country closer to the world economy and free itself from Russian embraces,” the diplomat said. According to him, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was afraid that the democratization of the country would cause him personal harm.
Heusgen stressed that at the moment official Minsk has become completely dependent on Moscow. He noted that Ukraine took a different path.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the citizens of Russia and Belarus should soon feel the effect of the implementation of the integration of the two countries. According to him, the main areas for integration are customs and tax legislation.
