In Georgia, said goodbye to actor Kakha Kavsadze

TBILISI, May 1. / TASS /. Georgian actor Kakha Kavsadze, who died on April 27 at the age of 86, was buried in Tbilisi at the Saburtala cemetery next to his wife Bella Mirianashvili. This was reported on Saturday by a TASS correspondent.

“He [Kavsadze] was a great man and actor. His departure is an irreparable loss for the Georgian theater, cinema and culture. For me personally, it is a great pain, because he was a very great friend of our family, my father,” Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, leader of the opposition party “United Georgia – Democratic Movement” Nino Burjanadze, who also came to say goodbye to Kavsadze.

Since Saturday morning, a civil funeral service was held in the large hall of the Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi Theater. Thousands of people came to say goodbye to Kavsadze, including Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and other government officials, as well as opposition politicians. Throughout the funeral service, the Rustaveli Theater screened excerpts from films and performances in which the actor played. Kavsadze's body was taken out of the theater to the applause of the people.

Kavsadze died in Tbilisi after a long illness. He has been in the clinic since February, where he was admitted for the second time in the past few months. For the first time in late November 2020, he was hospitalized with coronavirus, but recovered soon after.

The actor was born in June 1935. Since 1959 he has been playing at the Rustaveli Theater. In 1981, Kavsadze was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR. During his career, Kavsadze starred in such famous Soviet films as “White Sun of the Desert”, “Repentance”, “Melodies of the Veria Quarter”, “The Tree of Desires” and others.
