In Europe, they did not rule out the imposition of new sanctions against Russia in the event of Moscow's refusal to stop the special military operation in the Donbass. This was announced by the press service of the German Cabinet following the results of negotiations between Western leaders, RIA Novosti reports.
The countries noted that Russia's actions towards Ukraine are an attack on the European peace order. The message also contains a list of additional sanctions already agreed at the level of participants in the meeting.
Earlier it became known that Western countries agreed to disconnect Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment system. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed that the EU countries, together with their partners, intend to disconnect some Russian banks from SWIFT and are ready to continue isolating Russia from the international financial system.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a special military operation to protect Donbass. His press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that its goal is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and the timing of the special operation will be determined by the supreme commander.
The head of state also turned to external forces that might try to create a threat to Russia – according to him, the answer will be immediate.
