The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, complained about the interruptions in the supply of vaccines and noted that Europe was tired of being a “scapegoat”. Her words are reported by Bloomberg.
She criticized vaccine companies such as AstraZeneca for the pace of production, stressing that the company did not store doses of the drug when it started producing it in Europe. “I think the responsibility for organizing the supply lies with the company,” von der Leyen said.
Coronavirus deaths in Europe are on the rise amid supply problems. In particular, the other day the total number of victims of the virus in Italy exceeded 100 thousand people. Because of this, countries are blocking the export of vaccines produced on their territory to other countries.
According to the newspaper, AstraZeneca has delivered 10.7 million doses of the drug to the EU, while promised to deliver 40 million doses by the end of March.
On March 7, Austria suspended vaccination with AstraZeneca from a batch, after which a nurse died. Another unusual case is associated with the same party – a 35-year-old patient, also a medical worker, developed pulmonary embolism.
