In China, due to one wandering herd of wild Asian elephants, the authorities of the southwestern province of Yunnan have been forced to evacuate more than 150,000 local residents since mid-spring to ensure the safety of people, and about 25,000 police officers were involved.
This was reported by the Xinhua news agency. It is clarified that a herd of 15 Asian elephants began to migrate from Mojiang Hani Autonomous County in Puer Urban District, the path of giant animals ran through the agricultural lands of the inhabitants of the province and even in close proximity to settlements. During this time, elephants traveled more than 1.3 thousand kilometers through the urban districts of Yuxi, Honghe and Kunming, and their movement was monitored both from the ground and from the air using drones. When animals approached villages and settlements, people were temporarily relocated from there to other areas, and then allowed to return home.
It is worth noting that the travelers were left with food on their way. The fact is that Asian elephants, also known as Indian elephants, are protected by law in China. Now the country is home to about three hundred individuals of this species, and they live mainly in the Yunnan province.
