A group of Spanish archaeologists have discovered a new species of dinosaur. The bones of this creature were discovered during excavations in Catalonia, PLOS One reports.
The dinosaur was about eight meters long. It was given the scientific name Portellsaurus sosbaynati. Research has shown that he lived about 130 million years ago.
Scientists have noticed that long sharp claws have been preserved on the dinosaur's paws. This dangerous weapon was not used for hunting prey, as the creature was herbivore. But the claws probably helped him defend himself from predators, and also cut fruit.
After examining the skull, paleontologists also concluded that the dinosaur had large nostrils. This indicates a keen sense of smell necessary for searching for food in a dense forest.
The large tail helped the dinosaur maintain balance. In order not to lose balance, he had to keep it upright.
According to researchers, Portellsaurus sosbaynati was more than three meters in height and would have weighed at least 3,600 kilograms. Species similar to it have been found in China and Nigeria. Scientists believe the find could shed new light on the evolution of bird pods.
Earlier, experts clarified an important point in the history of dinosaurs. In their opinion, they began to die out long before the fall of the asteroid.
