The Canadian government has thought about strengthening its military presence in Eastern Europe against the background of the escalation of the situation around Ukraine. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Defense of the country Anita Anand, reports CBC.

“Strengthening our presence on the eastern flank of NATO, in particular as part of the [military mission in Eastern Europe] Operation Reassurance, is at the very top of my list of priorities,” the minister said. The Canadian military is currently evaluating its ability to withstand the multiple commitments to send troops, aircraft and ships on missions around the world, she said.

Anand also added that Ottawa has not yet sent the promised military aid to Ukraine.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Ottawa will provide lethal weapons and ammunition worth 7.8 million Canadian dollars (6.1 million US dollars) to Kiev. In addition, the politician approved an additional loan of 500 million Canadian dollars (about 390 million US dollars) to support the economic stability of Ukraine.
