Children under the age of 16 who are considering gender reassignment can hardly be considered mature enough to give informed consent to puberty-blocking drugs. This decision was made by a court in Britain, reports The Guardian.
It is noted that now sex reassignment therapy up to 16 years old can be carried out only if there is an appropriate court order. In addition, in the case of adolescents between the ages of 16 and 18, doctors may also need to consult a court in order to obtain approval for medical intervention.
The court decision, making it difficult for children to change sex, was brought against the lawsuit of 23-year-old Kira Bell, who filed a lawsuit against the clinic, whose employees did not dissuade her several years ago. At the age of 16, the girl felt that in fact she was a man, after which the doctors immediately agreed to help become a guy. Bell was prescribed drugs that inhibit the biological processes of puberty, after which her mammary glands were removed. However, the girl soon realized that she had made the wrong decision.
