In Britain, a bottle of whiskey went under the hammer for a million pounds

Macallan 1926 Fine and Rare whiskey from Speyside cellars (UK) set a record for online auctions. The day before, a bottle of this drink went under the hammer for a million pounds (about 1.78 million dollars). For the first time in history, a bottle of alcohol was sold for a seven-figure sum, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The Macallan Speyside went under the hammer as part of a broader collection of nearly 4,000 bottles. It was collected by the recently deceased American businessman Robert Gooding. For many years he regularly traveled to Scotland, looking for special bottles and collecting rare whiskeys.

The entire collection was bought at auction by an unknown person, paying 6,675,000 pounds sterling for it. At one time, distillers only bottled 40 bottles of Macallan 1926 Fine and Rare, and only 14, experts believe, still exist.

Other bottles of whiskey – Macallan: Fine and Rare from 1972 and Fine and Rare from 1940 – went under the hammer for £ 30,000 and £ 28,000.

Earlier it was reported that a painting by Van Gogh that has never been exhibited will be sold at an auction in Paris.
