In the UK, doctors had to carry out operation on a 7-year-old girl to remove a ball of hair from her intestines.
The operation lasted five hours after the child was delivered to hospital in Newcastle with complaints of abdominal pain and nausea, reports BBC.
During an examination, doctors discovered a 15-centimeter long ball of hair covering 80% of her intestines on 7-year-old Mia. It accumulated over several years while the girl chewed her own hair.
“If the doctors hadn't seen her in time, she wouldn't be here now,” Katherine's mother said.
She stated that it was terrible to start the hair that came out of her daughter's stomach. Doctors had previously told her not to worry about the constant hair-chewing action.
This conquest, known as trichophagia or Rapunzel syndrome, primarily affects teenage girls and can be caused by stress or anxiety.
Mia's mother says chewing hair helped baby calm down.
Catherine believes the condition is more common than people think and wants parents to take their children's hair chewing more seriously.
“I don't want anyone else to go through what our family went through,” she says.
Meanwhile, Miya has fully recovered and returned to school.
“Don't eat your hair,” she says. “You might not be as lucky as me, and if you do, you'll be in a lot of pain.”
