Police and demonstrators
In Berlin, the police prematurely stopped a street action by right-wing radicals at the Brandenburg Gate, which gathered on Saturday, March 20, about 300 members of neo-Nazi groups, the so-called Reichsburgers, as well as football fans. They were opposed by about 350 counter-demonstrators from the left political spectrum. They were separated and guarded by about 1,800 police officers.
According to the Berlin police, the action of the right-wing radicals, held under the slogan “Peace. Freedom. Sovereignty”, was interrupted due to the fact that during the march to the square in front of the Reichstag building, most of its participants refused to wear protective masks. There were clashes between some right-wing demonstrators and police officers.
For the first time, the Berlin police set up protected areas for journalists to protect them from possible attacks.
Kassel COVID Skeptics Action
On the same day, clashes broke out in the city of Kassel between protesters against the measures taken by the German authorities in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and police officers. The demonstration gathered about 20 thousand people, many of the protesters were without protective masks and were at a distance of closer than one and a half meters from each other.
According to the police, at some point some of the protesters began to attack the guards, who responded with batons, tear gas and a water cannon.
Increase in the number of infected
On the eve of March 19, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the refusal to further ease restrictions amid a pandemic is inevitable amid an increase in the number of infected. According to her, a mechanism was previously agreed according to which the exit from the lockdown will be suspended if the average rate of new infections over the past seven days throughout the country exceeds 100 per 100 thousand inhabitants.
At this stage, he came close to this mark, making, according to the Robert Koch Institute for March 20, – 99.9. “Unfortunately, we will have to resort to this brake mechanism,” Merkel said.
