Living in Asbestos: Canadians Decided to Rename the City Due to Bad Associations 6800 Canadian Asbestos residents voted for a new name for their city. Chosen from six names – from La Rochelle and Phoenix to Three Lakes and the Valley of the Springs. As a result, the last option won. For over a century, the city has prided itself on its giant Jeffrey asbestos quarry, which only closed in 2011. Since then, Asbestos has tried to get rid of the old image and create a new one, but to no avail. According to past estimates by the World Health Organization, more than 100,000 people worldwide die from asbestos-related illnesses each year.
