The whole of Australia was worried about the fate of little Cleo.
In Australia on Thursday, November 4, charges will be brought against the suspect in the high-profile abduction of four-year-old Cleo Smith from a tent during a family camping.
The Associated Press reports this with reference to the police.
It is noted that the 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning. He aroused suspicion among locals when he bought diapers: the neighbors knew that the Australian had no children.
It is known that on Wednesday evening the suspect was hospitalized from the site with bodily injuries. The police said that the man hit his head against the wall of the cell. At the same time, he did not receive any serious injuries.
Local media talked to the detainee's neighbors, who “expressed shock” that he could have been involved in the crime. People described the Aussie as a “very quiet” man who was always “on his own”.
Cleo Smith was found on Wednesday, November 3, 18 days after her abduction. The girl was alone in the kidnapper's house and was just playing with toys when law enforcement officers burst into the room.
Xante Mallett, a criminologist from the Australian University of Newcastle, said that it is rare to find a victim of a kidnapping by a stranger alive after more than two weeks.
“Unfortunately, they are usually killed quickly, most often in the first three hours,” she said.
That night, public buildings in the capital of Western Australia, Perth, 900 kilometers from Carnarvon were illuminated with blue lights to celebrate the success of the police investigation. And in Carnarvon itself, balloons were raised over the houses and congratulations were posted for Cleo on her return home.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison indicated on Twitter that this was “wonderful, facilitating news”, and the girl's mother, Ellie Smith, wrote on Instagram: “Our family is whole again.”
As reported, the child in pink pajamas disappeared from the tent with a sleeping bag at night. All of Australia was worried about the fate of little Cleo. It is known that the kidnapper did not harm the girl.
