In Antarctica, Vernadsky polar explorers recorded a rare natural phenomenon: what they saw

Scientists have recorded the southern polar lights for the first time.

Ukrainian polar explorers at the Academician Vernadsky research station managed to record the southern polar lights, which is an extremely rare phenomenon. Antarctica is located far from the Earth's southern magnetic pole, so it is extremely difficult to see the aurora there. However, in this case, favorable weather with frost and clear skies made it possible to avoid the usual cloudiness.

The National Antarctic Research Center reports this.

Geophysicists have recorded strong disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field, which is a necessary condition for the appearance of the aurora borealis. As geophysicist Yuri Otruba explains, this phenomenon was observed for the first time in eight winters, since devices usually record disturbances when the sky is covered with clouds or when it is almost always light in the summer.

The aurora borealis photos were taken on August 12. At first glance, the aurora looked like a light white haze with a pink tint, but the photographs showed green and purple colors. This phenomenon was observed at the time when the northern lights were recorded in Ukraine. The National Antarctic Research Center also recorded a storm of the K-8 level on the Bartels index, which describes the deviation of the Earth's magnetic field.

Recall that polar explorers from the Akademik Vernadsky station showed a cute video of Antarctic penguins and their chicks.
