Representatives of Poland and the Baltic states discussed a military response to a possible Russian invasion.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, it cannot be ruled out that in the near future the Kremlin may direct its “imperialist expansionism” to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The allies discussed the strategy for responding to a possible Russian invasion at the Defending Baltics conference, which took place on October 8-9 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
Bild writes about this.
The Lithuanian President's Chief National Security Advisor Kestutis Budrys said during his speech that the likelihood of such a scenario would increase if Belarus became part of the Russian Federation.
“Ukraine is giving us a few years. If Russia wins in Ukraine, we will have one Russian division in Lviv, one in Brest and one in Grodno,” explained former Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Rajmund Andrzejczak.
He stressed that if Russian troops cross the border of a NATO country, there will be an “immediate response.”
“Not on the first day, but in the first minute. We will strike all strategic targets within a radius of 300 kilometers. We will attack St. Petersburg directly,” Andrzejczak said.
The former Chief of the Polish General Staff added that European countries “must take the initiative into their own hands” and make it clear to Moscow that an invasion of Poland or the Baltics would be the beginning of an all-out war. And a tough, immediate response is the only way to keep the Kremlin from such actions.
Poland has already begun preparing for a possible Russian invasion. To this end, Warsaw has already ordered 800 missiles with a range of up to 900 kilometers, which will be used to strike Russian territory in the event of an attack.
According to the Chief of the General Staff of the Defense of Lithuania, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, Poland and the Baltic countries, which are located closer to Russia than other NATO members, should be able to independently respond to Russian aggression.
“We must be able to strike back immediately ourselves, without waiting for a decision in some NATO capitals on whether the Alliance should apply Article 5,” Vaikšnoras emphasized.
Recall that the head of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, expressed his opinion on the possibility of Russia attacking the Alliance countries. According to him, the Russians are not currently preparing an attack on NATO, since 90% of the Russian ground forces are already involved in Ukraine.
