The city of Evanston, Illinois, was the first in the United States to approve a cash payment program for black Americans to compensate for discrimination against their ancestors during slavery, the Washington Post reported. The vote was broadcast on Monday on the city council website.
The first phase of the program was approved by the Evanston City Council. It is noted that the decision on compensation was made due to the “damage caused by discriminatory policies in the field of housing, methods and inaction” of the authorities.
It is also noted that the Evanston authorities will pay compensation to citizens whose ancestors lived in the same city from 1919 to 1969. At least $ 10 million can be spent on the implementation of the program over several years.
Recall that from the end of May 2020, a series of mass protests began in the United States, escalating into riots, arson and pogroms. The actions in all states were provoked by the murder of the black George Floyd during the arrest. A police officer in Minneapolis choked him with his knee for eight minutes. The Black Lives Matter movement actively participated in the protests, which opposes violence against the black population of the United States.
