By the end of the decade, Putin could strengthen his army so much that Russia would be ready to attack NATO.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is confident that Russia could attack NATO territory.
Deutsche writes about this Welle.
“If we ignore the threat just because it makes us uncomfortable, it will not become smaller, but only larger,” he said in an interview published on Sunday, December 22.
According to the minister, Russia is not yet ready to attack NATO, but its economy already produces more weapons and ammunition in a few months than all EU countries produce in a year.
“By 2029 or 2030, Putin could strengthen his army so much that Russia would be able to strike at NATO. We must be prepared for the fact that in the coming years, Putin could try to test NATO cohesion by invading one or another part of the alliance's territory,” Pistorius warned.
He also recalled that in addition to a direct armed attack, there is a real hybrid threat to Germany from the Kremlin. According to Pistorius, this is part of Putin's strategy aimed at destabilizing and dividing German society.
“Putin is acting in a hybrid manner, and Germany is under his particularly close attention. He knows us well and understands where and how to inflict painful stings on us. We need to prepare ourselves to confidently counter the threat from Putin. Ignoring this threat will only increase its scale. We must do everything to ensure that Putin's strategy does not work,” he emphasized.
The minister clarified that this concerns attacks on infrastructure and energy supplies, activity in the North and Baltic Seas, as well as violations of airspace, social media campaigns and interference in election processes.
Recall that, according to Boris Pistorius, German soldiers in Ukraine may appear only after the ceasefire. But even in this case, it is still unclear how all this should happen.
