В случае победы, Трамп может потребовать у Украины отказаться от НАТО — Financial Times

Trump may agree to Ukraine's neutral status.

Former US President Donald Trump, if he becomes president again, may demand that Ukraine have a neutral status. The Biden administration is against this, believing that such a decision will not stop Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

This is written by Financial Times chief international affairs columnist Gideon Rachman.

Ukraine insists on the full restoration of its territorial integrity, including Crimea. The United States and its European allies say they will support Ukraine as long as it takes and will not impose peace terms on Ukrainians.

“The biggest obstacle to peace is not Ukraine's deep reluctance to make territorial concessions – although that is real. It is the fact that Russia will still demand a settlement that includes the conquest of the 80% of Ukraine that it does not control. Ukrainians need assurances that Russia will not use a peace settlement to rearm and then go on the offensive again,” he wrote.

Rahman believes that until they get that, there can be no serious debate in Kiev about borders or territory.

Kiev insists that Ukraine must join NATO, which would give it guarantees of the Alliance's collective security. At the last NATO summit, they said that “Ukraine's future is in NATO,” but that will only happen when the allies agree and the conditions are met.

Another idea supported in Washington is the “Israeli option,” which would avoid a formal commitment to defend Ukraine. At the same time, it is proposed to develop Ukraine with the help of advanced Western military aid so that it can independently deter future Russian aggression.

“Putin seems to be waiting for events in America. The Biden administration will not agree to Ukraine's neutrality. But the Trump-Vance administration can. As long as the results of the US elections remain in doubt, Putin has every incentive to continue the war,” adds Rahman.

Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contacted the team of US presidential candidate Donald Trump and that he has his phone number.
