“I find peace while making pottery”

by alex

Hannah Seifert is 24 years old and has been making pottery since school. She now works as a ceramic artist in Vienna

Hannah Seifert's day starts early and with a cup of coffee. Even in cold temperatures, she cycles to work. The 24-year-old is a ceramist and has shared a community studio in the seventh district with other ceramic artists for several years. Due to the current situation, however, there are no more than two people working in the studio at the same time.

Pottery craft

Hannah Seifert found pottery as a teenager. When she was 15 she did an internship with the ceramicist Marianne Seiz in the 14th district. “That's when I fell in love with ceramics,” she recalls. Seifert drops out of school and learns the pottery trade. For six years she devoted herself to working with clay together with the ceramicist Seiz and learned to make pottery on the disc with different types of clay and techniques.

Ceramic courses

Two years ago Seifert then decided to go her own way. She starts teaching ceramics courses at the community college and starts selling her homemade ceramics. The 24-year-old describes her artistic style as “delicate, natural and yet expressive”.

Trend towards pottery

Working with clay fascinates her anew every day: “It's a very diverse material, something so plastic and beautiful emerges from a lump of clay.” Seifert explains the current trend towards pottery as follows: “People need an analogue and tangible balance digital everyday life. ”

In Hannah Seifert's pottery courses, you learn to make pottery on the disc, different shapes and glazing within several weeks

Handmade ceramic pieces by the artist are available on request. A vase costs around 120 euros, depending on its size and material consumption
