Hungary accuses Ukraine of oil “blackmail”: what do they want in Budapest

by alex

Hungary insists that a solution must be found by September.

The head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's office, Gergely Gulyas, said that Ukraine is blackmailing Hungary and Slovakia with sanctions against the Russian company Lukoil. Budapest offers three options for a way out of the current situation.

Reuters writes about this.

“Ukraine is blackmailing two countries that are in favor of peace and a ceasefire. If the situation is not resolved, there will be a fuel shortage… A solution must be found by September,” he said.

Gulyas added that Budapest is currently trying to find a solution.

“One of them is that the Ukrainians admit that they cannot do this with two EU countries. The second is that the European Commission is helping us, and the third is that we find a legal loophole that allows someone who has not suffered from sanctions to transport us oil,” he said.

According to Hungarian EU Minister Janos Boka, Budapest is studying the issue of whether Ukraine's blocking of oil transit violates World Trade Organization rules.

Recall that the EU “failed” to support Orban and Fico in the conflict with Ukraine over oil. EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said that Brussels would need more time to collect evidence and assess the legal situation.
