Hundreds of tractors blocked the central part of the city: farmers clashed with the police

The strikers were sprayed with water cannons, and bottles and eggs were thrown at the police.

In the center of the Belgian capital Brussels on February 26, striking farmers clashed with the police. First, hundreds of tractors blocked the central part of the city, and then clashes between farmers and police began during the protest.

This is reported by DW.

Striking farmers gathered in Brussels on tractors and other farm equipment. In addition to Belgian ones, farmers from Spain, Portugal and Italy also took part in the action.

The so-called European Quarter was blocked by protesters' vehicles. The buildings of the European Commission and other European institutions are located in this area of the city.

Law enforcement set up barricades to keep strikers away from official institutions.

What farmers demand

The strikers are protesting against current EU agricultural policies, in particular the import of cheap agricultural products, especially from Ukraine, and regulatory policies.

During the action, they burned tires and set off fireworks, and also tried to dismantle police barricades with the help of tractors. In addition, the strikers scattered hay and spilled liquid manure on the roads, and threw eggs at the police.

In response, law enforcement officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd and water cannons to put out fires.

Also on this day, the agriculture ministers of the 27 EU member states gathered in Brussels to consider proposals to simplify the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP, CAP), which is causing a lot of controversy.

European officials' goal is to offer farmers more flexibility on land use and farm inspections to secure funding from the bloc's main agricultural fund. Another step towards farmers was the preliminary withdrawal of the European Commission’s controversial proposal on a rule on reducing the use of pesticides.

Meanwhile, Polish farmers committed the largest sabotage against Ukrainian farmers. This time, Ukrainian grain was poured from eight cars directly onto the rails, about two hundred tons of corn were spoiled.

The price of Ukrainian grain is very high, noted President Zelensky.
