Human rights activist explained the danger of a leak of human biometric data

Technologies that use human biometric data are being actively introduced in Russia. Recently, Natalya Kasperskaya advised not to give consent to the creation of her biometric profile, since in the event of information leakage, the consequences could be dire.

Director of the Center for Legal Assistance to Citizens in the Digital Environment Lyudmila Kurovskaya explained what the consequences could be if such information is lost and how to protect yourself.

– Before agreeing to the processing of personal data, clarify why they are collected and for what purpose they will be used, advises Kurovskaya in an interview with NEWS.ru.

In the event of a biometric data leak, the consequences will be much more serious than from the loss of a phone number or e-mail address. The number can be changed, but the face and voice cannot be changed.

But no one can force a person to forcibly agree to the processing of biometric personal data. It is carried out only with the written consent of the citizen and its absence will not be a reason for refusal of service.

– Before agreeing to biometrics, think about whether the list of requested data is redundant in relation to the stated purposes of their processing. Roughly speaking, if you are asked to send a copy of your passport to buy a movie ticket, then you have a reason to think, – says the expert.

In turn, the head of the Zecurion analytical center, Vladimir Ulyanov, told 360 that information leakage can occur because of people who have access to such databases. It is this (and not hacking with the help of some hackers and cyber programs) the most likely opportunity for attackers to get information.

If biometric information has been compromised, then practically nothing can be done.

“If you lost your bank card, you can reissue it, and if the biometric data is compromised, then they cannot be changed,” Ulyanov agreed.

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Vitaly Savelyev, said that by 2024 the country plans to introduce the possibility of paying for public transport using biometrics. According to him, similar systems are already operating in the new terminal of Sheremetyevo airport, where automated passport control is available, RT reports.
