Whether another major aid package to Ukraine will pass Congress will depend on the balance of power – whether it will be controlled by Republicans or Democrats.
If Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, it is almost certain that US aid will be frozen in order to force Ukraine to negotiate with Russia on Russian conditions.
This opinion was expressed by retired US Army Colonel Robert Hamilton, a professor at the US Army War College and one of the heads of the Foreign Policy Research Institute's Eurasian program, in an interview with LIGA.net.
According to him, the victory of Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris will mean the same approach to aid to Ukraine that was used during the presidency of Joe Biden.
At the same time, as the American expert noted, whether another large package will be able to pass Congress will depend on the balance of power – whether it will be controlled by Republicans or Democrats, one or both chambers.
“If the Democrats have a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and Kamala Harris becomes president, future aid to Ukraine is almost guaranteed. If there is a divided government, with Republicans controlling the House and Democrats the Senate and the White House, it will be more difficult. Kyiv will face the same problem as with the last $60 billion package, when the speaker almost lost his job and a small group of far-right Republicans blocked everything for a month,” Robert Hamilton suggested.
Recall that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has agreed to Fox News' offer to hold a debate with Kamala Harris, who has been nominated by the Democratic Party. The public discussion between the politicians is scheduled for September 4.
