Pavel Suprunyuk, a cybersecurity expert, Deputy Head of the Audit and Consulting Department of Group-IB, spoke about how to secure correspondence in messengers.
According to the expert, in order to be sure of the security of correspondence in the messenger under any circumstances, you should always pay attention to whether its specifications and source codes are open to the whole world. The expert also named the possibility of anonymous registration without uploading the phone's address book as one of the security criteria of the messenger.
An important point, according to Suprunyuk, is the ability to check who the user is communicating with. According to him, this can be done using the key reconciliation technology.
The expert also noted that it is necessary to monitor what remains on the device when using the messenger, and whether everything that the user removes from the program is actually deleted. “You need to pay attention to the attitude of the messenger to the data that it leaves on the user's device, whether there is an actual deletion of what the user has deleted in the interface,” Suprunyuk emphasized.
But the main thing, according to the expert, is the presence of end-to-end encryption. It is implemented at the best level in the most popular messengers now: WhatsApp, Viber and Telegram. If there is no end-to-end encryption, the owner of the messenger can access any information that the user has entrusted to the application, except for passwords. But the lack of this technology could compromise the messenger.
The expert emphasized that end-to-end encryption ensures the safety of the user, the messenger gets access only to the address book, where there are phone numbers and names for adequate communication with the device, and only with the consent of the user.
