Deputy executive director of the analytical center “Ukrainian Prism” Sergei Gerasimchuk believes that the reaction about the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico became a trigger for political forces.
He expressed this opinion on the “Espresso” broadcast.
“Society in Slovakia is quite polarized. Polarized in the sense that in the last presidential election, candidates with opposing views Pellegrini and Korczok received very close votes, Pellegrini won by a small margin. A similar situation was in the parliamentary elections last year, when it was also not completely clear how the coalition would be formed, and only because of Mr. Pellegrini’s decision to join the coalition with Fico, and he had a golden share, they were able to form a government,” said Gerasimchuk .
How the Russian Federation used the assassination attempt on Fico
According to him, the assassination attempt on Fico was immediately exploited by the Russian Federation. then other ideas came up – that perhaps this was all planned in order to deprive Fico of the opportunity to win the elections to the European Parliament.”
“Russia is in every possible way inciting a bunch of different frankly unhealthy fantasies in order to disorient society, polarize society, provide additional bonuses to right-wing radical parties, which will now say that it is their opponents in the pro-European camp who are ready to kill them, that , of course, can pull these opponents away from the democratic camp,” explained Gerasimchuk.

He added that, whatever the attacker's motives, both the Russians and the ruling and opposition parties immediately began to build their strategy around the assassination attempt and how to use it for their own purposes.
“Russians, above all, demonstrate creativity, although it does not always look healthy. I assume that, firstly, this theme will be used by right-wing parties not only in Slovakia, but also in the region and in the European Union, saying that society is so radicalized that they need to get a majority in the European Parliament in order to find new recipes that the current batch couldn’t handle,” said Gerasimchuk.
“Secondly, Robert Fico’s close friends – Viktor Orban and Vucic, that is, the leaders of Hungary and Serbia, have already declared their readiness to visit him under any conditions and it is obvious that this is an excellent “pass” for them , to suppress any opposition movements in their states, citing security protocols,” he added.
Deputy executive director of the analytical center “Ukrainian Prism” summed up: “In addition to all this, we must also remember the national context, that is, in Slovakia itself it will now be ethically unacceptable to criticize Fico, because a person who is bedridden after attack is unlikely to be a criticism, which, in principle, will allow his party colleagues to continue the changes that they initiated, and these changes concern both the weakening of responsibility for corruption and the concentration of control over the media, that is, everything they opposed opponents.”
