Buildings built by people, cars, animals, the very population of cities – all this presses on the surface of the Earth with its weight. Finding out how much a particular city weighs is quite difficult, since the mass is constantly changing due to the influx of people and the non-stop construction of buildings. Rambler will tell you how much Moscow weighs and how the weight affects the Earth.
According to some rough estimates, the mass of Moscow is about 308 million tons, and this is without the study of sewer pipes, furniture, animals and much more. And, if this number seems too large to you, then according to the same sources, the mass of Tokyo is approximately 900 million tons. To make such calculations, you need to know the weight of each person, building, as well as roads, cars, and this is only a small part.
The same approximate calculations were made by the American researcher Thomas Parsons. He set about calculating the approximate mass of the city in which he lived, namely San Francisco. But this was not his ultimate goal, Thomas was going to find out how the severity of cities affects the Earth.
If you do not delve into the calculations, then Parsons managed to find out that cities are compacting the soil under them and lowering the level of the land. For example, in the case of San Francisco, the land level dropped by eight centimeters at the time of the study. And such a small figure can cause global catastrophes. Scientists estimate that by 2050 the sea level in the San Francisco Bay will rise by about 30 centimeters. And in the future, this may lead to the fact that most of the city may end up under water.
