European Union (EU) officials continue to take action to demonstrate the EU's non-alignment with the political position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán regarding the war in Ukraine.

EU Commission spokesman Eric Mamer On July 15, said that due to Orbán's recent actions, EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will not participate in informal meetings led by Hungary.

According to Politico, three unidentified EU diplomats said that EU High Commissioner Josep Borrell will hold “an official meeting of the foreign affairs council at the same time as the summit Foreign Affairs Minister of Hungary in Budapest at the end of August 2024.

Other EU foreign ministers want to “send a clear signal that Hungary does not speak on behalf of the EU Minister of Foreign Affairs.” EU Sweden Jessica Roswall told Reuters on July 11 that Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland would only send civil servants to government meetings related to the Hungarian presidency EU Council in July 2024 and other EU countries are considering similar.

Note that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban conveyed to the leaders of the European Union his “peace plan” on Russia's war in Ukraine – with goals and deadlines.
