Hotel on fire in Thailand, Ukrainian citizen among dead

A fire in a hotel near the popular tourist street Khao San Road in Bangkok killed three foreigners and injured several people. Among the dead was a Ukrainian citizen.

The Associated Press reported this.

The fire broke out Sunday evening, and three of the victims were foreign tourists. One of them was found dead at the scene, while the other two died after being transported to a hospital, police Colonel Sanong Sengmanee said.

Police later identified the dead as a Brazilian woman, a Ukrainian man, and an American. Five people were hospitalized, including a Japanese woman in critical condition. The other victims were a Japanese man, two Germans, and a Thai electrician.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the six-story Ember Hotel, police said. Khao San Road is a popular street among tourists, known for its vibrant nightlife.

The fire has been contained, but the cause of the blaze is still being investigated. There were 75 people in the hotel at the time of the fire.

Srikanth Kolamala, a 37-year-old Indian man living in Singapore who was in Thailand on holiday, witnessed the rescue operation. He said that firefighters “broke glass to pull people out”.

Khao San Road Business Association President Sanga Ruangwattanakul said that due to the incident, people are afraid that it will affect the planned New Year's event, which is expected to attract more than 20,000 people. However, he assured that more than 150 police officers and district administration employees are already working on security issues.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt also stressed the importance of ensuring security ahead of the New Year celebrations, when various festive events will be held in the city.

Recall that in the Chernihiv region, two children and their mother died in a fire.
