Orio al Serio Airport was forced to temporarily suspend flights due to a deadly incident.
At Bergamo's Orio al Serio airport, one of Italy's busiest, an unidentified man stormed the runway and died after being sucked into the engine of a passenger plane.
Corriere della Sera writes about this .
According to preliminary information, a man aged about 35 entered the airport from the arrivals area, broke through the security door and ran towards the aircraft, which was just about to take off. The plane, an Airbus A319 of the Volotea airline, was supposed to fly to Asturias, Spain.
At the time of the tragedy, the aircraft was completing a pushback maneuver – pushing away from the parking area to enter the runway. At that moment, the man found himself next to the engine and was instantly pulled inside.
All aircraft movements at the airport were immediately stopped. According to the airport operator SACBO, flights were suspended from 10:20 until approximately 12:00. The company noted that law enforcement officers are still investigating the causes of the incident, and called the incident a “technical incident on the taxiway.”
It is still unclear how exactly the man managed to bypass security, pass through numerous barriers, emergency doors and other checkpoints. From the terminal to the aircraft parking area there are more than 200 meters, protected by numerous restrictions.
The incident has deeply shocked the airport staff. SACBO President Giovanni Sanga expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and stressed that psychological assistance is already being provided to all employees who witnessed the tragedy. The company has also organized support for the passengers and crew of the aircraft.
Let us recall that earlier we wrote about a man who approached a little boy at the airport, picked him up and threw him on the floor, the child ended up in a coma
