In Hong Kong, it was decided to suspend vaccination with the Pfizer / BioNTech product due to the identified packaging defects in one of the batches. Reported by the South China Morning Post.
Vaccination was suspended at all vaccination points where this drug was received. In total, physicians reported 50 cases of defects. Among them – cracked bubbles, leaking bottles, incomprehensible stains on them.
Problems were identified in batch number 210102. It includes 585 thousand packages. Of these, 150 thousand have already been introduced to the residents of Hong Kong. The next batch, under the number 210104, in which 758 thousand doses is also in the city's warehouses. There were no problems with it, but the authorities decided to temporarily abandon its use as a precautionary measure.
Pfizer / BioNTech's vaccination operator in Hong Kong is Fosun Pharma, a subsidiary of the Shanghai-based Chinese conglomerate Fosun. The same company supplies the drug to another special territory of the PRC – in Macau. Fosun Pharma has notified the Hong Kong and Macau authorities of problems with the caps of the vials that contain the vaccine. BioNTech said Tuesday night that a number of vials in this batch had sealing problems, according to Fosun. Fosun promises to immediately investigate the incident, including at the manufacturing plant.
The BNT162b2 vaccine was developed by the German company BioNTech in collaboration with the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. Vaccination uses two doses given several weeks apart. As of March 17, it was the second most popular coronavirus vaccine in the world after the drug from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. Serious side effects were not previously known from the vaccine. The Austrian Federal Office for Health Safety announced in early March that 40 people have died in the country following a massive vaccination with this drug, but no direct link has been found between the deaths and the vaccine.
